they are virtually undetectable. Many
scientists have used this type of
galaxy to propose that galaxy types
represent an evolution from wide
spirals, like the Milky Way, to
ellipticals, but very little evidence for
this position is now available. 
 irregular (peculiar) galaxies are
chaotic stellar systems that lack
discernible symmetry and do not fit a
standard classification. Irregular
galaxies are often associated with
violent activity, such as explosive
bursts of star formation.
